Technical expertise is only half the battle for IT service and support professionals. A strong professional network is crucial, and that's where HDI Local Chapters shine. A staple in the industry for decades, these 24 nationwide groups offer a supportive environment where peers connect, share best practices and offer support.
What's helped HDI Local Chapters endure the test of time? We spoke with four dedicated members about their experiences and the value of this vibrant community.
A Lifeline of Support and Learning
Kristi Lawrence, Manager of IT End User Services at Tyler Technologies, describes HDI as more than just a network — for her, it's been a lifeline.
"When I was laid off a couple of years ago," she recounts, "this community embraced me, offering support in countless ways, from sharing job leads and helping me improve my resume to simply being a listening ear during a challenging time." Beyond career assistance, Kristi emphasizes ongoing learning opportunities. "This community continues to be an amazing resource for learning better ways to manage my team, benchmarking metrics, and staying informed about changes in the IT Support industry."
Her advice to newcomers is simple: "Go for it! The more you invest in this community, the more you gain. We're all here to support each other's success."
Igniting Passion and Fostering Leadership
Laurie Luuken, Senior Solution Center Manager at Nebraska Furniture Mart and current HDI Local Chapters President found renewed purpose through HDI. "I had been with my company for 23 years, and because of the flat organizational structure, my upward mobility opportunities had halted," she explains. "HDI reignited my passion for IT service and support, motivating me to try new things and improve our support."
Laurie's involvement has been transformative, both professionally and personally. "I have developed a support system that I am so proud to call my friends. I want to pay forward the sense of belonging and meaning HDI has provided me."
Looking ahead, her vision for the Local Chapter community is clear: "Reinforcing how strong our community truly is and reminding members of the immense value it brings to their careers."
Networking, Knowledge and the Power of Connection
Chris Eider, Technology Support Manager at IGS, discovered HDI at SupportWorld Live in 2018. "After connecting with local chapter leaders, I knew I wanted to be more involved," he says.
Chris highlights how the HDI Local Chapters keep members at the forefront of industry trends. "Our events are always catered to what's happening in the industry, bringing in experts to discuss emerging challenges. Networking with a diverse range of professionals also allows exchanging valuable insights." But for Chris, the real magic lies in the connections. "The continuous connections and the opportunity to help others find value in HDI keeps me coming back. The HDI family is what makes it all worthwhile."
Confidence, Growth and Giving Back
For Donald Chew, Supervisor of the IT Help Desk Unit at Mayo Clinic, HDI provided a much-needed spark. "After 11 years at the Mayo Clinic Help Desk, I hit a wall and was looking for new energy and motivation," he recalls. Encouraged by his manager, Donald attended an HDI conference, and "from that moment on," he knew he'd found his place.
He's since embraced numerous leadership roles, including Awards Committee Chair and District President. "I've learned so much," he says, "how to analyze metrics effectively, the power of employee recognition, and even how to improve my public speaking." Donald is particularly passionate about the HDI annual awards program. "I love what these awards represent. IT service and support professionals are often unsung heroes, and this is a way to recognize their hard work on both a local and national level."
